Why is my mushroom grow kit not working? ›

This might be due to the temperature being too low, insufficient moisture, or poor air circulation. It's crucial to create a warm, humid environment with good air circulation for your mushroom kit to flourish.

A continuous shower of CO2 directly onto your plants is the most efficient way to deliver CO2. Placing the Aussie Mushroom CO2 bags slightly above the level of your plants will ensure they receive the CO2 they need, 24 hours a day for up to 6 months.

Give your block some fresh air

Leaving the plastic on your kit helps to keep moisture in, preventing the block from drying out. Feel free to spray it periodically when it's looking parched as you would inside. After a couple of weeks, you should expect mushrooms after heavy rainfall or after a big temperature shift.

Expect to grow: 2-3 harvests of mushrooms / 150g - 300g

The first flush will always be the biggest. We've had some customers grow up to 4 flushes of mushrooms from our kits but on average you'll get 2 harvests.

Off-odors: A strong, foul odor emanating from the growing containers or growing medium. Abnormal growth: Mushrooms that grow abnormally, such as those that are misshapen or stunted. Presence of molds: The appearance of molds, such as white or blue-green growths on the surface of the mushrooms or growing medium.

Most mushroom kits will store for 3-6 months in the fridge if necessary. To store your kit, keep it in the fridge. This puts the mycelium into hibernation and will prevent it escaping the box early. Don't keep it somewhere it could exceed 30 degrees Celsius.

Mycelial spores are inserted into special sterilised saw dust (this is the material you can see in the bag) As the mycelial spores attack the saw dust CO2 is produced within the bag. You know it is working as the material in the bag will become white.

The only bag that requires activation is The ExHale 365 bag. After removing the hanger, move the mycelial mass onto the substrate. In roughly two weeks your bag will be producing its full CO2 capacity.

Being able to self activate the mycelium is likely the best feature. Other brands arrive activated, and you have no idea how much life is in them, With Exhale, you begin the process yourself, so you know about how long your bags will last...which is 9 months on average!

Gypsum is a mineral that helps speed up the mushroom growing process in small amounts. A teaspoon of gypsum is added to the supplemented sawdust mix, which also includes hardwood sawdust pellets, wheat bran and water.

Should mushroom kits be kept in dark? ›

Many gourmet mushroom grow kits need light to grow, so keep them in a bright spot away from direct sunlight. This allows you to watch your mushrooms grow and some types will double in size every 12-24 hours.

Oyster mushrooms are pretty resilient to contamination, they fruit relentlessly, and they can grow on a whole whack of different substrates. They are super tenacious, and can fruit mushrooms even if conditions aren't picture perfect- making them an excellent choice for a kit.

If you are successful, it is fairly worth it because you should be able to harvest, over time, more fruiting bodies than you would by purchasing the equivalent for what a kit costs. However, there are no guarantees, and if you don't put the effort in, or things go wrong, it will be a loss.

Oyster mushrooms are the most profitable because they are the easiest to grow and you will find minimal competition in many markets because they do not ship well. Locally grown oysters typically sell for twice the price of shipped-in mushrooms from a distributor. What are the most valuable mushrooms to grow outdoors?

Why isn't my bag colonizing? / There is no growth. If this is the case for you, one of the simplest solutions is to wait longer. Many species take several weeks (sometimes months) to colonize the bag depending on species, environmental conditions, and/or the vigor of your spores or culture.

Humidity is quite important for mushrooms. If there isn't enough humidity, the mushrooms may slow down and/or stop growing. It would be like if we don't hydrate ourselves on a hot day or when we're exercising – we begin to slow down and not feel too good. Solution: You should mist more often.

Logs that drop below 25% in moisture result in death of the shiitake fungus. If the mycelium is dead, white shiitake mycelium will not grow from either end of the log. Freshly cut logs contain the most moisture.
