“A New Spin on Vinyl” is now on display at YoloArts’ The Barn Gallery.
Started by Sacramento artist Dwight Head in 2018, the first “New Spin on Vinyl Show” (aka “The Record Show”) was created to honor Russ Solomon. The show showcased “records not only giving us hours of listening pleasure, but also endless inspiration as fine art,” according to a press release from YoloArts.
Russ Solomon, founder of the world-renowned Tower Records that brought tunes of all sorts to the Sacramento area and around the globe, was a big supporter of the arts in California. His art collection included works by many regional artists.
“Since the success of the first exhibition, there have been yearly exhibits, involving more artists, and artworks in a variety of mediums,” the press release said. “Even as the show has expanded, the core theme remains; all artists incorporate records into their work.”
This year’s exhibit has been co-curated by Head, Barbetta Lockart and Cynthia Lou.
“This exciting exhibition boasts elements of modernism, nostalgia, and reuse of a unique material,” the press release continued.
Artists and instructors Head and Lockart will be conducting a workshop where participants will create works of art using paint, glue, paper, and mixed media on old phonograph records as your art surface on Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. The Artery will be presenting the stunning photography of Garry Everett in “Nature in Focus” beginning July 5.
“Garry invites you to experience the diversity of our extraordinary world as seen through his camera lens,” said a press release from the Artery. “Garry’s work offers an escape from today’s hectic lifestyle as he captures the vibrant beauty surrounding us. With his camera he shares the wonder and tranquility he experiences while creating that single, unique moment in time. He hopes his work will inspire viewers to explore our amazing planet.”
The exhibit will have a reception on Friday, July 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. “Nature in Focus” continues at the Artery through July 29.

Davis Musical Theatre Company’s production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is now playing at the Jean Henderson Performing Arts Center in Davis.
The show, based on the beloved Disney animated film of the same name, follows King Triton’s youngest daughter Ariel who longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea. When the young mermaid visits the surface and immediately falls for the dashing Prince Eric, she makes a bargain with the evil sea witch Ursula to trade her tail for legs.
“The bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea,” said a press release from DMTC. “Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. This fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including ‘Under the Sea,’ ‘Kiss the Girl’ and ‘Part of Your World.’
“The Little Mermaid” plays on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through Sunday, July 14.
Tickets are $18 for general, $16 for students and seniors over 55 and $14 each for groups of 10 or more.

The June 30 deadline is fast approaching to submit an application to direct a production for the Winters Theatre Company’s upcoming 2025 season.
“We are excited to hear about your proposals for any type of production (drama, musical, comedy, etc.),” said the Winters Theatre Company’s website. “Give us your pitch!”
The 2025 season will be selected from director submissions.
Those interested in applying should use the online form that can be found at the Winter Theatre Company’s website. Applications will be accepted through June with in-person interviews taking place in July and August.
All directors can expect a reply to their application by September. The Play Selection Committee will then take all applications and interviews into account and recommend a 2025 season calendar for submission to the WTC board by November 2024.
