Ask school counselors and the college financial aid office about state, college, and nonprofit grants and scholarships you can apply for. Be sure to meet application deadlines. Start saving before you get to college.

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after October 1 each year. The FAFSA can be completed online at studentaid.gov. The priority deadline at Nicholls is April 15 for the Fall semester. The award year at Nicholls is fall, spring, and summer.

However, the FAFSA enables the student to qualify for many types of financial aid from several sources. Some of this money is free money, some must be earned through work, and some must be repaid.

You can also check the status of your FAFSA form by contacting the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243. To check on the status of financial aid being disbursed (paid out) to you or your account, check with your school's financial aid office.

Sometimes, students borrow more in student loans than they need to fund their education. Students in this situation may wonder “what happens if I don't use all of my student loan?” In most cases, colleges will refund the money to the student.

You can appeal after you apply for financial aid. You can appeal in the middle of the academic year. You can appeal during the first year in college or after the first year in college. It is best to appeal for more financial aid as soon as the special circ*mstance has occurred.

Is FAFSA first come first serve? ›

As with federal student aid, many states have limited funds and hand out assistance on a first-come, first served basis. You do not need to apply directly to your state to qualify for aid. Instead, you need to submit your FAFSA by June 30.

Some states and colleges continue to award aid to FAFSA latecomers, but your chances get much slimmer, and the payout is often lower. If you miss the end-of-June federal deadline, you're no longer eligible to submit that year's FAFSA form. Did we mention you shouldn't miss the deadlines?

Contact your loan servicer as soon as possible. You may be able to change your repayment plan to one that lowers your monthly payment and, in some cases, may be based on your income. You can also ask your loan servicer about your options for a deferment or forbearance or loan consolidation.
