Recently my husband was pining for Chicken a La King served over Pepperidge Farm pastry shells, (a.k.a. vol-au-vent). I was sure PF didn't make those anymore, and I wasn't going to make them myself. But it turns out they do. So I bought a package and made basic a Chicken a La King recipe (just google) and it was a huge hit. I'm making it again this week.
Just a thought.

I've never tasted Chicken à la King but it looks delicious.

It's one of my favorites from Stouffer's. I used to have it in Banquet boil-in-bags when I was a kid.

School lunch, Thursdays. I liked it.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 8, 2024 8:16 AM |
Mmm, my mom made it all the time
There was a comedian popular when I was a kid, Alan King, I thought this was named after him

You know Swanson makes canned chicken a la king, right? Amazon it.

Meat Loaf
Which is called Hackbraten and can be purchased at the butchers freshly made and ready to pop in the oven. It's always better than my own.

Never had the stuff and it's probably good but the photo makes it look like somebody vomited lunch.

Prefer it over white rice.

Chicken lacking flavor.

We had this at the school cafeteria

I think we used to call it sh*t on a shingle. Is that the same thing? Put over a slice of toast?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 8, 2024 12:25 PM |
^ I think that's chipped beef
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 8, 2024 12:27 PM |
Yep, you're right. Thanks R13.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 8, 2024 12:29 PM |
R10, made properly, it's pretty good. It's basically chicken pot pie without the pie.

I love chicken a la king :)

Chicken A La King was only good out of a Banquet bag you boil.

My mother always used pastry shells when she was out of ideas, turkey curry, seafood newburg, etc., probably the reason I like anything in those things to this day.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 9, 2024 12:28 AM |
I like the idea of chicken á la king, but it usually has pimientos, which I detest.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 9, 2024 3:41 AM |
^ I don't like them either, so you use some chopped red pepper instead
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 9, 2024 3:48 AM |
Funny. Last night I was thinking of making a pot pie by getting a Costco rotisserie chicken, making a cream gravy with the drippings. Adding some frozen peas and carrots that is sold out there. They come diced. Cut up the chicken into small cubes or chunks, mix that in, pour the whole thing into a Marie Calendar pie shell with a pastry top and baking it. Was surprised to see this here.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 9, 2024 4:11 AM |
^ Mmm, pot pies are so good especially if it's cold out
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 9, 2024 4:28 AM |
R32 I love pimentos but I challenge you to find them. Because I am a lazy whor* I do all my grocery shopping through Instacart. I add a little jar of pimentos every single time, and Instacart shows "plenty in stock" but they are perpetually out of stock.

Stouffer's used to make a frozen Lobster Newburg (boil in a bag) which we ate over those pastry shells. Very rich and surprisingly delicious for a frozen dinner.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 9, 2024 5:59 AM |
R39 Stouffer's used to make a Noodles Romanoff that I would commit crimes to eat again. There are copycat recipes online, but none of them come close to the original. It was a f*cking masterpiece. Every Stouffer's social media account is continually bombarded with requests to just make this f*cking great thing again, but for reasons we will never know, they refuse.

^ Stouffer's used to make a frozen Welsh Rarebit that was out of this world. I would have it at least a couple of times a month, but like everything Stouffer's used to make that was good it was discontinued ☹️
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 9, 2024 7:13 AM |
I had just discovered Stouffer’s Welsh Rarebit and had it over toast only twice when they discontinued it. I wish they’d bring that back, it really was good.
Wish I. Had tried the lobster Newburg..

Eldergays should NOT be eating this!

That's because your shopper is timed and ain't nobody got time to go hunting for that. Thus, out of stock!

The chicken a la king at OP should have more sauce, plus the mushroom looks raw (despite being coated in sauce), but it does look good.
It's just white sauce (flour, butter, milk) with chicken and whatever vegetables you want to put in it.
My school cafeteria made turkey a la king.
