With freezing rain Wednesday morning, some schools have decided to delay the start of school or cancel it altogether.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Tuesday night for the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts, southern Worcester County and north central/northeast Connecticut.

The weather service said although snow showers falling throughout the state Tuesday night should end early Wednesday morning with less than an inch of accumulation in most areas, “spotty light freezing rain will be possible Wednesday across portion of central and western Massachusetts, along with most of northern Connecticut.”

A spokesperson for Worcester Public Schools sent an email Tuesday just before 9 p.m. announcing schools there will delay opening by two hours “out of an abundance of caution.”

“We will monitor the weather overnight. If conditions deteriorate and we need to cancel school, we will notify families and staff as soon as possible,” Dan O’Brien wrote.
