Dog Christmas Cookies (1)

My dogs loved these cookies and could not wait until Christmas to devour these. I do sometimes wonder if it's pack mentality of eating everything I give them but Pixie is key. She is the only one who will turn down a vegetable or treat. She loved these so, that's my benchmark!

Rice Flour for Dogs

This is not my number one flour for baking purely because our house is full of low carb flours. Rice flour is gluten free so it is still welcome with us for my furry mini zoo. I will use rice flour for homemade dog treats as it has a similar baking property as wheat flour without the grains. It binds well and is great for baked dog treats.

Dog Cookie Ingredients

All you need is 4 simple pantry ingredients to bake these homemade Christmas dog treats recipes.

Dog Christmas Cookies (2)
  • Pumpkin puree - we use our homemade pumpkin puree recipe to ensure that it's sugar and additive free.
  • Rice flour- this gluten free flour binds well into a cookie dough. We have not yet tried this recipe with other flours.
  • Eggs - A great source of protein and helps bind the cookie dough
  • Cinnamon - An anti-flammatory spice that is dog friendly.
  • Spirulina - for the cookie icing we use a mix of blue and green spirulina mixed with Greek yogurt.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

Storage

Keep these homemade dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you store them with the yogurt icing they make become a bit softer. To be honest, your dogs won't care! They will keep up to 5 days in the fridge.

Substitutions

The rice flour could be replace with whole wheat flour for a non gluten-free dog treat.

Coconut flour can be used for a low carb dog treat but the volume would need to be reduced to about a cup because it absorbs liquid at an increased rate due to the fiber content.
