How to Make Homemade Christmas Dog Cookies

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2

To make the dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, add the butter, honey, eggs,all purposeflour, and oat flour. Mix on low until combined.

Step 3

Lightly flour your work surface. Roll out the cookie dough to ¼-inch thick, adding more flour if needed.

Use holiday cookie cutters such as Christmas trees, candy canes, snowflakes, or gingerbread men and cut out cookies. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 4

To make the topping: In a small dish, add the honey and water. Microwave for 15 seconds or until the honey is melted. Using a pastry brush, brush the honey water topping on top of all the cookies.

Step 5

Bake for 17 to 20 minutes or until golden brown around the edges and bottom. (If you're baking at high altitude, be sure to check the Notes at the bottom of the recipe for high altitude baking instructions).

Can I make these into another shape?

Yes, this recipe would be perfect if you want to use a dog bone cookie cutter, Santa, or any other shape. You could even use a heart for Valentine’s Day.

Can I make these without a cookie cutter?

Yes, you can totally make these without a cookie cutter. You can still roll out the dough and just cut them into squares or triangles. If you don’t want to roll them out (which I feel you), then you can roll them into balls with your hands and flatten them so they are very thin.

What cookie cutters did you use for this recipe?

I used an assortment of holiday cookie cutters – a snowflake, Christmas tree, candy cane, and gingerbread man. You can find the cookie cutters I used to make this recipe here.

Can I make this recipe soft and chewy?

Absolutely! If you have an older dog or one who needs a soft treat, then you can definitely make this cookie soft and chewy instead of crispy. Just bake them for less time. Try about 5 minutes less, and go from there. I had some thick ones, as I am terrible at rolling out cookie dough, and the thicker ones that baked for the same time ended up being soft and chewy.

How should I store homemade Christmas Dog Cookies?

These can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. They are a thin and crispy dog cookie, so they don’t need to be in an airtight container. But I have actually been storing them in an airtight cookie jar for the past two weeks and they are still good in that too. So this is a very forgiving recipe! If you are going to keep them longer than 2 weeks, I’d recommend freezing them in an airtight container.
